Wimbledon Visit

Following the inaugural Tim Phillips Shield Tennis Competition run in October on Foundation Open Morning, OM Mr Phillips, CBE and former Chairman of Wimbledon very kindly invited two senior Millhillians to visit the All England Club. It was appropriate therefore for Sixth Former, Henry Goode (Winner of the Senior Shield) and Fifth Former, Su Mae Chua (best girl who competed in the Senior Shield) to attend the day. In the report below Henry describes his unforgettable experiences.

“Having an opportunity to explore Wimbledon without the crowds was a truly memorable experience. We started by entering through the prestigious entrance hall to Centre Court. Looking at the Champions Trophies and walking out behind Centre Court gave us a real sense of perspective you have as a player.

“We then went up onto the terrace and looked down on the fields of grass courts outside the main Centre Court stadium. From here we walked through a set of doors into the Royal Box where we overlooked the Centre Court, the home of many champions over the years. It was here that Mr Phillips presented me with the Tim Phillips Shield which I won back at Mill Hill in October.

“We were guided down the players’ walkway to the Gentlemans’ Changing Rooms where I was shown the lockers of Federer, Nadal and Murray. After getting changed in the same location as countless professionals, we proceeded to one of the outer courts to play. Tossing the ball up to serve and seeing the iconic Centre Court back drop glowing in the sunlight is perhaps the greatest memory I will take from this day.”
