Remove and 5th Form Curriculum

English

English Studies in the Remove and Fifth Form consist of a variety of subject matter. Most pupils study two GCSE English courses. First there is English (language) itself. This is one of the three foundation subjects of the National Curriculum and is assessed at Key Stage 4 of that examination. It is the most fundamental subject of a school’s curriculum, for its skills are employed by all other subjects: comprehension, the capacity to read and understand written information; writing, the means by which we express our information, understanding, opinions and feelings; finally, the oral form of these accomplishments, listening and speaking which may also engage pupils in creative drama work. Within English, pupils examine language and images as they are used in newspapers, magazines, and advertising.

Most pupils will, additionally, study English literature, learning to use and understand language by reading and discussing the work of its most skilled practitioners. The study of literature is, of course, an end in itself and provides the opportunity for a great deal of enjoyment as well as an improved appreciation of the world about which literature is written. A variety of texts will be studied, drawn from the major genres: novels, poetry and plays.

Assessment in English and English Literature is by a mixture of coursework and final examination, and syllabuses for both subjects are those offered by the AQA examination board.
