Remove and 5th Form Curriculum

French

By the time pupils reach the Remove year, they are well acquainted with the communicative approach to French which is adopted in the School. As reflected in the Edexcel Board GCSE examination, equal emphasis is given to the four skills tested: reading, writing, listening and speaking. Language acquisition is a vital and dynamic process. The department uses Encore Tricolore, a course which is contemporary in theme and based on the new demands of the National Curriculum. The skill areas taught are as follows:

  1. In preparation for GCSE, there is a considerable amount of oral work. Pupils are taught to deal with a wide variety of situations in which they will find themselves in France, such as arranging transport and accommodation.
  2. The aural component presents plenty of authentic material, usually in the classroom, but, if appropriate, in the language laboratory. As well as hearing native speakers in various situations, pupils are exposed to interviews with students and adults; they are taught to interpret these.
  3. The reading element teaches candidates to demonstrate understanding of advertisements, interviews and articles.
  4. Finally, the written element teaches pupils to construct clear and accurate letters and stories. The former are both informal, for example to a French pen-friend, and formal, to hotel managers and the like.

Remove pupils will be offered the opportunity to take part in a French language activity week at the Chateau du Broutel in northern France. The programme will offer a mix of french lessons, cultural and historical excursions in the region, and outdoors activities at the chateau itself.

Two groups of approximately twenty particularly able Remove linguists sit the GCSE examination a year early. These groups will then embark upon a continuation course in the Fifth Form which may lead to AS Level.
