Personal, Social, Health and Religious Education
The Personal, Social, Health and Religious Education programme (PSHRE) enables pupils to share their experiences and reflect upon them in an interactive way and within a supportive environment.
The first half term is devoted to Wise-up, a module concerned with the misuse of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, and Studywise, which enables pupils to consider their own learning styles and to adopt more effective ways in which to learn and study. The remainder of the year is devoted to other modules which include:
- Health and Bodywise
- This examines the requirements for a healthy diet. It considers the link between eating patterns and self-image as well the effects of peer pressure and the media upon health. Pupils develop the skills to be able to prevent ill health. The module also encourages pupils to consider a healthy exercise programme and the need for suitable environments and leisure time with which to enjoy activities.
- Togetherwise
- This considers the factors which contribute to a healthy relationship and encourages pupils to discuss their feelings and attitudes towards sex. Pupils learn about contraception and the sources of help available to them.
- Streetwise
- Pupils research a topic and can write an article, produce a news bulletin or T.V. programme or plan and implement a community event.
- Creditwise
- Pupils learn how to deal with money and how to cope with debt. They learn to understand about buying on credit and how to make use of the variety of financial tools and services.
- They begin to make career choices and develop the skills of working with others as well as preparing for job interviews.
A variety of teaching methods are used, such as small group discussion, brainstorming, project work, and debating. Pupil learning is supported through ICT, videos, magazine and newspaper articles and extracts from books.
Pupils and teachers are encouraged to evaluate each lesson and module and contribute to the future PSHRE programme.
