Lower 6th Form Curriculum
Biology
Syllabus Followed: AQA ‘B’ syllabus
Entry Requirements: Grade B in GCSE Biology or BB in GCSE Combined Science.
A good standard in Chemistry is beneficial. If taking Dual Award Science, your mark in the Biology component must also be of at least B grade standard.
AS Level Course Content
- Unit 1: Core principles - 30% of AS course, exam length 1hr
- This module covers some of the key concepts which are fundamental to any advanced Biology course. It includes sections on biological molecules, cells, transport of substances into and out of cells, gaseous exchange, enzymes and digestion. The sections on molecules and cells contains a large amount of material not encountered at GCSE whilst the other sections tend to build on GCSE knowledge. A knowledge of fundamental Chemistry is assumed in this unit.
- Unit 2: Genes & Genetic Engineering - 30% of AS course, exam length 1hr
- This unit sets the AQA ‘B’ course apart from other A Level courses. Genetics is probably the most exciting field of current biological research and this unit offers both a course in fundamental genetics as well as an insight into the fascinating practical applications of gene technology. Specific topics covered include DNA and the genetic code, cell division and cloning, sexual reproduction, genetic modification of plants and animals, genetic diseases and gene therapy.
- Unit 3a: Physiology and Transport - 15% of AS course, exam length 1hr
- This unit consists of very fundamental human physiology such as blood and circulation, the human heart, the effects of exercise on the body. It also considers aspects of plant physiology such as the movement of water, sugars and mineral ions in plants.
- Unit 3b: Coursework - 15% of AS course
- Continually assessed practical work (assessed by end of Spring Term L6). Assessment of 4 skill areas that are very similar to GCSE. Practical assessment will happen throughout the course.
- Careers and Higher Education Links
- Biology is one of the most versatile of all A Level subjects. It tests the full range of academic skills. The range of university courses and careers linked to Biology is extensive. Medical and Dentistry schools in London now require at least an AS in both Biology and Chemistry, with at least one of the subjects followed into the A2 course. Other medical schools are expected to have similar requirements. But, it should be emphasised that A Level Biology is far more than a preparation for Medicine!
- The A2 course
- Much of the A2 course is built around specialist optional modules. A field trip takes place in the second half of the Summer Term after the AS examinations have finished, and this trip forms the basis of the major practical investigation required in the A2 course. Otherwise, A2 builds on the foundation established at AS Level.
