Syllabus Followed: Edexcel
Entry Requirements: Grade B in GCSE French (A recommended)
The course is demanding but the committed student will come away with a broad insight into many areas of French society, culture, art, literature and history. Lessons cover a great deal of ground and personal revision and research are keys elements for success at this level. You will also have a session each week with the French assistant who will help you to prepare your oral topics.
The department has a wide range of resources in a variety of media which you are encouraged to use in your own time. The Piper Library also has a growing collection of French reference works, novels, ‘Bandes Dessinées’ and contemporary music.
The Modern Languages Society meets every week to watch French films at lunchtime and there are several trips each year to French films and plays in or around London. There is an expectation that you will want to spend a good portion of time in a French speaking country during your course and you must not underestimate the importance of the oral component of the course which requires a high level of accuracy and fluency. The French department has links with schools and institutions in France that can support you in this.
The courses offered are relevant and stimulating and open up a wealth of opportunities for intellectual and personal development. Those that carry on to study languages at university will find themselves much in demand as language graduates remain amongst the most sought after by future employers.
