A2 Sport and Physical Education

The A2 modules of learning provide pupils with the opportunity to develop and extend their knowledge, skills and understanding gained at AS. This enables pupils to identify factors that lead to the optimisation of their own or others’ performance.

Unit 4: Physiological, Biomechanical and Psychological Factors which Optimise Performance

The aim of this unit is to progress from looking at the general principles behind the developments of efficient, effective and quality performance in selected activities learnt at AS, to applying them more specifically to ensure the highest quality performance possible.

Looking specifically at both physical and mental preparation of the elite performer for competition. The pupils will learn in more detail the ways that physical, biomechanical (not covered in AS) and psychological priorities relate to and impact on each other. (15% total A Level marks – Exam: 1½ hours)

Unit 5: Factors Affecting the Nature and Development of Elite Performance (Section A)

The aim of this unit is to use their knowledge of cultural, traditional and historical aspects of specific areas of activity or sport learnt at AS, to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of the development of elite performers in the UK, France and the USA.

There is also a Synoptic Assessment (Section B) in this unit where pupils will reflect holistically upon their own progress and the possibilities available to others.
