‘School years should be some of the best times of a person’s life and Weymouth aims to provide a happy supportive environment for all students. The first thing that strikes any visitor to Weymouth is the lively informality and good spirit in the House. Past students will often comment that they felt “at home” within Weymouth.’
Weymouth has recently celebrated its 100th anniversary and is named after a 19th century Headmaster of the School.
Weymouth House is based on a clear set of values – achievement, effort, integrity and courtesy. They underpin everything we aim to do in the House. Weymouth pupils are actively encouraged to achieve to their maximum potential across a wide range of pursuits: academic, musical, social, dramatic and sporting. They are encouraged to show effort in all that they do. All students are expected to act with integrity and make sound ethical judgements in their actions and behaviour and to show courtesy and respect towards themselves, their teachers and any visitors to the House.
Weymouth aims to be a very warm and friendly house where every pupil is treated with care and respect. Weymouth has been a remarkably successful House in recent years. Its pupils regularly achieve their potential academically as well as in sport, music and drama. The House has a number of unique features such as our own Acapella group which is organised by the Senior Tutor, Peter Kwok. Weymouth House also stages an annual Musical Soiree which both showcases the extraordinary musical talent within the house and raises substantial funds for the School’s Partnership programmes in Tamil Nadu and Nicaragua.
It took me until my final year to fully appreciate the part that Weymouth House has played in my school life. Having been a student at Mill Hill for almost five years, I can safely say that without the support system and friendship I have found in Weymouth, I would not have had the strength to try new things and achieve my ambitions.
There is a real sense of teamwork within the House, a unity that crosses all the year groups and brings us together as one. Nothing can demonstrate this sense of House spirit more than the fantastic events that Weymouth has taken part in over the years. Winning the House Music competition last year was a brilliant achievement which pulled the house together and showcased the many talents of our students. Whenever there is a House event Weymouth pupils always steps up to compete no matter the outcome. If we're not in it to win it, at least we’re in it!
Weymouth proudly celebrated its one hundredth birthday in 2008. We hosted a wonderful afternoon soiree for over eighty guests. It was a time for students past and present to reminisce about the years spent as a member of Weymouth house The message from all who attended was clear – Weymouth has grown enormously and continues to be a source of pride not only for the school, but especially for its members around the world.
Weymouth is a very special House for me. There is a feeling of togetherness and family which we share .Everyone looks out for each other. We put on a number of special events as a House each year. The most obvious one is the Soirée’s in which we can display our musical talents and raise funds for charity. Recently, we celebrated the centenary of Weymouth as a House which was fantastic. The Housemaster and tutors are really important; Mr Hughes’s enthusiasm for the House rubs off onto everyone and he encourages us to do well in everything and the tutors are the teachers who know you best in the school and who can support you each and every day. They do much more than just registering you twice a day. They keep an overview of the academic side but also encourage you to get involved in different aspects of the school and in the U6th, your form helps a helps a great deal with university applications.
I have been a pupil at Mill Hill School since September 2007. Ever since I joined, I have found the house system hugely beneficial. I feel that it provides a sense of security amongst pupils. Whenever we have an issue, our housemaster is always prepared to listen and tries to solve our concerns. It also gives teachers the chance to monitor our school life ensuring that we are as content as possible. The house feels like my second home since I am familiar with my surroundings and I am always able to socialise with my friends. It is a friendly environment and a great place to engage in recreation whether it be watching TV, playing pool or simply talking and taking your mind off a busy school day.
