There has been a settlement in and around Mill Hill Village for some 2500 years. A prehistoric hand-axe was found in the grounds of the School and Bronze Age relics have been discovered in nearby Lawrence Street. A Roman road passed through Copthall Field, probably leading to Verulamium (St Albans). A Saxon knife was also discovered in the grounds of the School by master Norman Brett James. As a result of these and other finds, the Ridgeway has been designated an Area of Special Archeological Significance.
