Mill Hill in the 1930sTo celebrate our Bicentenary, we are producing a rather special limited edition print. The print depicts Mill Hill in the late 1930s, represented by artist Norman Wilkinson as one of his Famous Public Schools of England and Wales series. The series was produced for the London Midland and Scottish Railways Company in the years before World War Two. A prolific artist, Wilkinson first came to prominence as the designer of dazzle camouflage for the Royal Navy in World War One. He went on to become President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. He also drew for such titles as the Illustrated London News. However, it is for his maritime art and railway posters that Wilkinson is most fondly remembered. His depictions of famous schools are particularly evocative, providing a comforting, idealised image of pre-war life. A Mill Hill parent alerted us to the fact that the National Railway Museum had a single copy of the rare Mill Hill School poster. Once we had seen a facsimile of it, a worldwide search was instituted to track down and buy an example for the School archives. After six months of searching a beautiful copy was found in the United States. It has been conserved and framed and will be given a place of honour in the new Favell Building. The poster has been reproduced in a high quality limited edition run of 200. The cost of prints will be: £35 unframed The original poster is very large at 100 x 150cm, but the reproductions are A3 size. If you would like to order a print, please contact Karen Willetts, c/o Admissions Department at Mill Hill School on 020 8959 1221, or e-mail kw@millhill.org.uk. |
