Sir James Murray

Mill Hill member of staff Sir James Murray was the originator of the Oxford English Dictionary. The story of Murray has been immortalised in Simon Winchester’s two books The Surgeon of Crowthorne and The Meaning of Everything. Murray is remembered at Mill Hill today as one of the day Houses is named in his honour, and his pioneering early work at Mill Hill is commemorated in the Murray Scriptorium – appropriately now an IT teaching facility.
