Frances Winfield

National Essay Competition Success

Many congratulations to Frances Winfield (L6, Weymouth) who came second in a national essay competition run by Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. She chose to write about innovative works of English literature between 1880-1939, focusing in particular on Virginia Woolf’s novels as well as a number of other contemporary writers. In particular her essay explored the impact of Woolf and others on the burgeoning modernist movement of the period. Speaking of Frances’ entry, the judges of the competition stated that, “despite the high number of entries made nationally they were particularly impressed…and admired, most especially, the range and subtlety of (the) argument in her essay.” Frances visited the college to collect her prize of £150.
