Single handed hockey was a unique derivative of the double handed sport. It was officially played with teams of 9 although team sizes were often unlimited in breaktime. The sport could be remarkably violent at times and had its own quirky rules – for example the large solid rubber ball could, if caught ‘cleanly’, be thrown at the goal and if the goalkeeper held onto a caught ball for too long he could be charged by his opponents. Playing the sport was abandoned in the early 1960s as it was felt that hockey technique and rules were being undermined by the single handed sport.
