Each year, pupils from 12 of our feeder schools compete in the successful Mill Hill Junior Open Tennis Competition at Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn.
This year, the fifth competition, (which is aimed at Under 11s, Years 5 & 6), attracted over 60 pupils, and once again it was a full day of tennis for the children with both competition and fun coaching drills on a glorious summers day.
The boys’ competition was won by the talented Andrew Rozanov from St Anthony’s School. In the final Andrew beat UCS pupil David Pourquery, 4-1 in a match which consisted of extremely challenging rallies.
The girls’ competition was a Belmontian final between Kiana Goharian and Olivia Gurney-Randall. Being a year older, Kiana out rallied her opponent with some powerful ground strokes. However there is no doubt that we will see Olivia back next year in search of the title.
To add to the excitement of the day, 17 year old professional British tennis player, Tara Moore ran a coaching clinic for the boys and girls who did not make the knock out stages. With a UK ranking of 17 and a world ranking of 604, Tara who is coached by the Gosling Team presented the trophies and prizes to all the finalists.
In the past British Davis Cup players Arvin Parmar and Jamie Delgado have also supported this event.
