This week in Year 1…

The children had an amazing time dressed in their outfits to commemorate the Queen’s coronation. Another day of dressing up was the ‘break the rulez day’. They certainly broke the rule in lots of ways! It was a great day all in all.

In Literacy this week, Year 1 have been learning to understand what a synonym is and finding alternative synonym words. The children learnt how to use a thesaurus to find different alternative words with the same meaning. e.g the word ‘big’ can be written or said as ‘enormous’, ‘gigantic’, ‘humongous’ etc. Also, in literacy, the children used their senses to describe the deep-sea setting. They were encouraged to use similes, adjectives, and interesting synonyms in their writing.

In Science, the children have been learning to classify animals and whether they are living on land or sea. The children described and compared the structures of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals including pets) and classified them into groups.

In Art this week, our art specialist demonstrated how to draw and paint wonderful deep-sea fish using different techniques and mediums. They created fish collages inspired by the work of Eric Carle and then attached them to a sea background made by using ink, oil pastels and wax candles.
