The award of Exhibition (also referred to as a Scholarship) is made solely on the basis of academic performance in tests and an interview taken at the age of 11. Awards are for the duration of the candidate’s time at Belmont and for the 5 years at Mill Hill School, provided that progress and conduct remain satisfactory.
Academic Exhibitions, worth normally up to 10% of the tuition fees, will be awarded on academic merit shown in the entrance examinations and any subsequent interviews. There is no financial means test in connection with the award of Exhibitions, although awards may be increased by the addition of a means tested bursary. Exhibitions are tenable for 2 years at Belmont and continue for 5 years at Mill Hill, our senior school. All pupils registered for Year 7 entry (internal and external candidates) will automatically be considered eligible for an Academic Exhibition. The pupils gaining the top marks (numbers vary from year to year) will be asked back to attend an additional interview.
Music Exhibitions are available at Belmont School. For more detailed information on deciding whether to make an application, please consult the Music exhibitions page. Testing is not based solely on current graded achievement; candidates are auditioned individually and ascertaining potential is an important element of the audition process. Exhibitions would normally result in an award up to a maximum of 10% of the fee and/or musical tuition being paid for by the school in a specified number of disciplines. Applications should be made on the appropriate form. For further details and an application form, please contact the Head of Admissions.
The award of a bursary by the Mill Hill School Foundation is subject to the financial resources available at the time. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate financial need by completing a Statement of Financial Circumstances and awards can be up to 100% of the fee.
The final decision will be made by The Governors of the Finance and General Purposes Committee, after recommendation by the Bursary Committee, of which the Head is a member. Consideration of academic standard, general conduct and overall contribution (either current or potential) to the School is reviewed by the Bursary Committee. All the information provided will be treated in the strictest confidence.
All bursaries are subject to annual review. Any award made at Belmont will, provided the applicant continues to meet the criteria, continue through Mill Hill School. Bursaries are considered only when a child is in Years 7 and 8.
A pupil who is the subject of an Award is required to work hard, to contribute positively to the life of the School, to be a credit to the School and to set a good example to other pupils. These are the Purposes of the Award.
The parents are expected to support and encourage the pupil to achieve the purposes of the Award and to uphold the aims and the good name of the School. The parents are also required to pay the balance of the account by the first day of term.
The Award may be withdrawn by written notice sent to a parent if, in the opinion of the Governors acting in good faith, the pupil or a parent has not complied with their obligations set out at paragraphs 1 and 2 above or otherwise the pupil has fallen below the required standards of conduct and progress and in the further opinion of the Governors there has been no significant improvement following consultation with a parent and/or the pupil, and a written warning. Withdrawal of the Award shall take effect from the start of the following term.
Further, the Award may be withdrawn by written notice if the balance of the account remains unpaid after a written reminder has been sent to the parents.
Parents shall be required forthwith upon written notice to repay all or part of the benefits they have received under the Award in any of the following circumstances:
These Conditions of Award take precedence of any of the School’s Standard Terms and Conditions which are inconsistent with them but in all other respects the Standard Terms and Conditions as amended from time to time shall apply and these Conditions of Award shall be interpreted in accordance with them.
