Sports Hall Update, Pupil Voice and One Foundation

A Ball for a Wall

I hope you have had an enjoyable week. Good progress is being made on the Sports Hall and the children have been fascinated by the ongoing work that they are able to see through the vision panels. We have made great progress with the demolition of the old gym and the ground work to get ready for building the new sports hall.  As things stand, work is on schedule and we hope to have children playing sport in our fantastic new facility this side of Christmas.

We have ambitions to give our new Sports Hall the wow factor to accommodate a wide range of different sports and activities including cricket nets and a climbing wall. The ‘Ball for a Wall’ on June 8th will go a long way to funding a climbing wall that our children will be so excited by. You can see an artist’s impression of the sort of wall we are looking at below.

In addition to being an important fundraiser, the ball promises to be a wonderful evening in an impressive venue with some high quality entertainment. World class musicians, Totem, managed by Old Belmontian, James Alexander, are back by popular demand after their huge success at the ABC Ball in 2017. I am also delighted to announce that the Belmont Jazz band will be performing during the drinks reception and we are hoping that we will have performances from Belmont and Mill Hill West End stars. I am very excited about hearing current Millhillian and former Belmontian, Amma Ris, perform. Amma starred as Tomika in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ‘School of Rock’ whilst in Year 7 and 8. For those who were able to attend Parents’ Day last summer you would have been moved by Amma’s spine tingling rendition of Adele’s ‘Someone Like You’. I am also awaiting confirmation of another West End star but this is subject to scheduling of their current show. I really hope that you will be able to enjoy the evening with us on June 8th. Pupil Voice

The theme of the week was all about pupil voice. Year 8 pupils delivered a fantastic assembly on Monday to get across the importance of speaking out with a brilliant, as ever, piece of drama written by Libby Russo, showing how key people had changed the world by speaking out. Taking the roles of Martin Luther King, Malala, Galileo and Socrates to name but a few.  The children watching were gripped by the talented actors on show and reminded about how they need to find their own voice. Throughout the week, pupils have been feeding back their thoughts on how the school can improve to their School Council form representatives. It has been a great process and once we have all of the information we hope to be able to respond to the issues raised by the children to demonstrate the power of their voice and to show that as a school we are listening.

One Foundation

In Sport, it was great that Belmont teams were invited to participate in Mill Hill’s 5/10 mile cup this year. This annual event was fun for everyone and another example of how Belmont and Mill Hill are collaborating and involved in more joint events now than ever before. We have also had two highly successful transition lunches with Year 9 Mill Hill pupils talking to our Year 8 pupils about what life is like at Mill Hill School and the exciting opportunities that await them over the road.

I would like to wish our Under 13 netball team the best of luck in the IAPS National finals today as well as our Under 11 footballers who are competing in the ISFA regionals for a place in the national final. Stay up to date on how we are doing through our social media channels Twitter:@MillHillBelmont, Instagram: @MillHillBelmont

To top off a week of cross Foundation collaboration, we have a netball tournament tomorrow morning involving Grimsdell, Belmont and Mill Hill mums. Unfortunately, I have a governors’ meeting but I wish everyone involved the best of luck. I hope you have a great time and remain injury free!

Wishing all of our families a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Leon Roberts
