We are in the process of an exciting project at Grimsdell; the redevelopment of our school library. Our school librarian has been designing, researching and acquiring the thoughts and opinions of our children in order to create an environment that will be warm, welcoming and child centred – so that a love of reading is enhanced and nurtured within all our pupils.
In addition to refreshing our stock with a range of wonderful new children’s literature we will regularly be updating this with the most up to date authors and new titles. We will also be using the library to develop further interest in our topic for the term, currently Ice worlds, with a range of fiction and non-fiction ‘icy’ titles available for the children to take their enthusiasm to a new level.
Yesterday a beautiful frost covered tree appeared on the library window, adorned with recommended reads for children and in line with our Ice Worlds theme. This has created a real buzz amongst the children about what they can expect next from our library transformation. We are even considering a new name and look forward to hearing lots of suggestions from staff and pupils.
Once the grand opening takes place in March during book week our librarian, Clare Harvey, will be running library sessions for all classes across the school and will also run a reading focussed ‘task time’ within our creative curriculum. We will then be opening the library at the end of the day for children to borrow books along with their parents and younger siblings. Its position on the ground floor next to school office and front entrance really puts it at the heart of the school and I am so excited about it becoming an even greater hub of learning and excitement.
