As we are right in the middle of our London theme, it is true to say that we have been particularly excited at Grimsdell by the prospect of the Royal Wedding. Hot on the heels of our fabulous trips to central London to see the sights, we have now been gradually been preparing for our very own version of The Royal Wedding: The Grimsdell Royal Wedding Garden Party.
We started with an Assembly about weddings on Monday; exploring all the traditions, looking at photographs from my own wedding and even seeing my actual wedding dress which I brought into school! We also enjoyed looking back at past Royal Weddings and imagining the depth and noise of the crowds along with the sense of ceremony.
Throughout the rest of the week other vital preparations have been taking place for our version of the big day; Year One have made the flower table decorations, Year Two have made the invitations and prepared to play a percussion rendition of The Wedding March. Our musicians will also play the National Anthem which Year 2 have been learning. We have even invited The Queen!
Watching the children come into school in their smart wedding attire this morning was a real treat that actually brought a tear to my eye. The children, helped of course by all our parents, made such a huge effort and really got into the spirit of the occasion.
It is wonderful to see how a national event and sense of broader community within the UK can translate perfectly into a smaller community event within a school. I am sure Grimsdell is not alone in celebrating the wedding today and I am sure that every school doing so will enjoy being brought together as a community because of a happy occasion.
For us at Grimsdell, the wedding has been an opportunity to deepen our learning on our theme, be creative and link to other areas of the curriculum whilst also building our community spirit and having fun!
