Grimsdell is India

Our theme based approach to learning at Grimsdell is now in its second year and this term’s theme, India, is taking us on a rich and rather magical journey.

The colours and sounds of India can be seen and heard around the school with each year group exploring aspects of Indian geography, history and culture, building these experiences into a range of activities that build knowledge and skills simultaneously.

This week our topic has gained new momentum as we approach Diwali. We have had Indian dancing, where counting the beat and working with a partner was vital, we have had story re-enactment and re-telling of Rama and Sita, and we have had wonderful artistic creations and poetry writing related to this Hindu Festival.

It has been particularly special to observe the children in our school who are Hindu or who are from Indian origin connect deeply with this topic and see their own traditions and culture explored and celebrated, not just for Diwali over a long and immersive period of time by the entire school. They have exhibited ownership, pride and excitement in sharing their knowledge and experiences with children in the school, who in turn have loved learning from their friends.

This is how we embed deep rooted respect and celebration across different cultures within our school. We hope that if all the schools across the world are equally open in their approach to learning from cultural difference, the future for our children will be a world where we all show appreciation and positive curiosity for the variety that exists around the globe.
