Little Authors

I was treated to a visit by five smiley Reception pupils this week who wanted to show me their story writing. The children have been working on a combination of story scribing and independent writing so that they are developing their sentence structure, punctuation and creativity alongside their handwriting and application of phonics.

The progress and independence shown in the children’s writing was a joy to see but equally valuable was their excitement at showing me their work and their enthusiasm for the writing process itself. They were so proud and engaged; not only in their own pieces of work, but each other’s. It was lovely to hear them say ‘I love your story’ or ‘your story is really funny’, showing an appreciation of one another’s work.

Writing should be child centred, meaningful and a pleasure. Children in Reception need to feel positive and empowered by the writing process and the faces of these children as we shared each story was a true reflection of this.

As they left I called them ‘little authors’ which made them chuckle, and I hope will encourage them to visit me again with more of their work.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.
