You may be aware that we have been supporting Highgate School with the setting up of the London Academy of Excellence Tottenham. After significant work behind the scenes the LAE opened this month and welcomed their first students.
Tottenham is the prime catchment area for the LAE, and offers within Tottenham and beyond a very powerful message – that Tottenham is a place for aspiration. It is now six years since the riots that took place on Tottenham High Street and there is still a feeling amongst some of the young that they cannot leave fast enough.
The LAE, however, seeks to address this concern and provide a truly aspirational focus within the heart of the area. The college lies behind the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium due to be finished next year: with this £750 million commitment to the area Spurs has provided a clear sense of hope for the future. The LAE seeks to provide this through education; their website states:
“We exist to provide the very best opportunities for our students with a particular focus on developing confident learners who achieve top A Level grades thus opening the door to the best further education available to them. Beyond this, we aim to ensure that once students access the most competitive courses at top universities, they have the confidence and resilience to feel that they belong.”
Mill Hill has provided support to the LAE through a link with the Chemistry department. We were delighted, therefore, to welcome 12 LAE students to our school earlier this term with their Chemistry teacher. They were hosted by a number of our pupils who took them to lessons, showed them our site, and talked about their aspirations. Despite some differences in background and experience, the students got on well and were excited by the opportunities to do more together. We look forward to a return visit to Tottenham where this link can be further developed.
