The facilities of the Design Department are available to pupils for use in their free time throughout the week and during Saturday activities.
All pupils in Years 9 and 10 take Design and Technology (D&T) completing three projects during each year, gaining experience in the use of computer-aided design and manufacture, workshop theory and practice and basic design skill. For their first project, for example, Year 9 pupils look back to the Bauhaus school of design in order to explore the beginnings of modernism. They acquire the basic workshop skills and safety training then create a Bauhaus inspired desk organiser.
Year 11 pupils may choose to take GCSE D&T Product Design as an option. Pupils design a product for a client in the school. They seek their client’s advice and feedback at each stage of the project then manufacture the product in the workshop. In the past two years, pupils have designed lighting for their delighted clients.
Design Technology gives pupils the opportunity to solve problems through creative thinking, applying their practical workshop and designing skills to a range of applications.
