RECYCLING COMMITTEE STARTS THE YEAR WITH A BANG

An atmosphere full of optimism, enthusiasm and purpose beamed from the Seminar Room on Thursday 4th October; the first Recycling Committee meeting of the year took place. Following the success of the committee last year, the nine representatives sat down with an air of confidence and determination. Plans to achieve the Silver Eco Schools Award were soon discussed and an Action Plan was created to meet objectives. The four main objectives comprised:

  • To raise awareness of energy conservation at Mill Hill, as although pupils are aware of the recycling initiatives they are not so aware of energy conversation measures.
  • To raise awareness of the issue of food waste and to reduce the quantity of food thrown away which is far higher than we would like.
  • To develop opportunities at Mill Hill with recycling as the focus, i.e. such as the project that previously involved Lower Sixth pupils.
  • To introduce recycling initiatives into the Boarding Houses, where often boarders have a lower level of awareness and commitment to recycling.

Plans for a PSHRE presentation, House Focus Week and Campaigns were indicated as effective ways to realise the objectives. The representatives left with plenty to think about and prepare, agreeing that regular meetings are essential if the award is to be attained.

RECYCLING COMMITTEE VISITS GREEN-WORKS

On the 6th December the ten privileged, Recycling Committee representatives visited Green-Works. Accompanied by Mrs Sanchez and Mr Duran the small group set off, eagerly waiting to be inspired.

We were introduced to Joe, the friendly manager of Green-Works and soon clad in High Visibility vests and broad smiles we began our tour. “There’s no better business to be in…” he announced proudly, as he continued to explain that Green-Works is changing the way society thinks about waste through re-using, recycling and re-manufacturing furniture. We spent almost two hours wandering amongst the warehouse shelves, completely astonished by the vast quantity of high-quality products available and the modest prices at which Joe seemed content to part with them. We were so impressed that several conditional deals, reliant on Housemasters/Mistresses approval, were struck. I would like to strongly encourage all Housemasters and Housemistresses to visit Green-Works, for the future purchase of furniture for the Houses. The furniture on offer is cheap, creative, of the highest quality and most importantly, environmentally-friendly.
