Our pupils come to us from a variety of feeder schools and so they spend their entire 4th Form learning how to learn maths; this includes their covering some familiar topics and extending these into new, more challenging areas and, all the while, working on their problem solving and reasoning skills.

Our pupils then commence their GCSE Mathematics in the Remove and some are also given the opportunity to study for an IGCSE in Further Pure Mathematics; this qualification contains a lot of material from an AS Level in Mathematics and so is great preparation for those pupils wishing to go on and study Maths with Further Maths at A level.

Mathematics is the most popular subject at A level and one of the next most popular A levels is Further Mathematics. The results of our pupils at A level, with fantastic numbers achieving A and, particularly, A* grades every year, is a testament to the encouragement from the department for pupils to develop their understanding of the subject and their ability to solve problems in any context.

We encourage pupils to develop Growth Mindsets, where they continually look to stretch and challenge themselves and they should never be happy to give up or try the easy option. This has had the beneficial effect of improving our pupils’ independent learning skills. This may also be why so many pupils of Mathematics are now leaving the school to study Mathematics or Engineering at some of the top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge every year.
