4th Form Curriculum

Music

Fourth Formers receive one lesson of Music per week, which is taught in small groups. The music lessons have a strong practical bias, and for much of the time are centred around percussion workshops, which focus on rhythm and notation. Keyboard skills and pitch notation are introduced through IT-based work using the ‘Sibelius’ music programme. Video and audio worksheets provide an introduction to GCSE listening skills, and include classical music, jazz, pop, and world music. The newly refurbished Music School boasts excellent facilities for both the practical and the academic study of music.

In addition to curricular music, visiting teachers provide lessons in most instruments and singing. Pupils are entered each term for Associated Board practical and theory examinations. There are opportunities to participate in a very wide range of musical activities such as choir, chamber choir, orchestra, jazz band as well as numerous jazz and pop groups and chamber ensembles. Recent music tours include trips to Scotland, Denmark, Italy and the USA.
