Music at Mill Hill embraces a rich cultural heritage. Ranging from the music of the Renaissance to contemporary popular song, the department offers a wealth of performance opportunities to young musicians.
Pupils have the opportunity to receive individual music lessons in all the traditional instruments (including the organ) with highly skilled visiting music staff, many of whom are notable exponents in their field.
Curriculum music is taught up to A2 level, and the school also hosts the Gundry Prize, an annual composition competition, and the biennial Farrow Singing Competition. The school’s highly popular Unplugged series nurtures song-writing talent.
In addition, there are orchestras, choirs, wind ensembles and a Jazz band that meet throughout the academic year. Choral music is a particular strength of the department; recent events include tours to the USA and Italy, and a performance at St. Paul’s Cathedral. The department has produced several CDs: 2007 sees the release of Jazz at the 200 in celebration of the school’s bicentenary.
