‘The House has a strong ethos of consideration and support for each other in all areas of life around the school. Life skills such as leadership, communication and teamwork are at the forefront of everything we do in School House.’
School House is located at the east end of the main School building. It was originally boarding accommodation and was divided into Weymouth and Scrutton Houses. The House became a day house in the 1980s and continued to accommodate boarders until the mid 1990s, when Mr Woodrow was Housemaster. The House has 80 pupils and there are excellent facilities for both boys and girls which have recently been upgraded following an extremely generous donation in 2009.
The House has a strong tradition of academic excellence and all round contributions to the life of the school. It has a positive and friendly atmosphere where pupils are encouraged to push themselves to reach their full potential both in the classroom and also in the wide variety of extra-curricular activities offered by the School. Above all we aim to provide an environment in which pupils can achieve and be happy whilst at school.
The House system at Mill Hill is fantastic as it gives you a place where you belong. The Houses are very competitive and people become almost patriotic towards their particular house; this is how I am towards School House. The House Spirit in a House is created and spurred on by the Housemistress – there is certainly a strong spirit in School House coupled with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The key to playing a vital role in the house is to get involved in the numerous competitions and as you compete for your house you will find yourself building really close friendships with the other members of the House. I have taken part in countless competitions for School House, many of which we have won, I was honoured to be asked to be Head of the House this year and to hopefully inspire the House spirit in the other students as has been inspired in me by my Housemaster and previous Heads of House.
School House is a House where you can get involved in all sorts of different activities. There are always different councils to be involved with and through the House system contribute to the life of the school. There is an opportunity to get involved with responsibilities in House and also there is an opportunity to help the younger pupils in the house through the mentoring system. I have been involved with the CCF and this year I am in the Cadre which has the opportunity to train the new fourth formers when they start CCF. This has allowed me to learn how to teach lessons and how to work within a team. School House has had lots of work done on it and the quiet room is the best room for the students who want to catch up on work or even to do their prep in their lunch hour. Recently School House has been refurbished and there have been the addition of new computers to the quiet room.
The games room has a pool table in School House Colours, a table football table, a Play Station 3 and a flat screen TV with freeview. The room is also filled with soft relaxing comfortable chairs for anyone who just wants to watch a bit of TV or just relax.
