Sir Norman Hartnell

Old Millhillian Sir Norman Hartnell designed Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s dress for the coronation in 1953. Sir Norman credited his headmaster, Sir John McClure, with encouraging his early interest in design.

Hartnell is one of three Old Millhillians who are recognised as key designers of the 20th century. The others are ceramicist and architect Keith Murray and architect Ralph Tubbs.
