Old Millhillian Herbert Ward’s statue Grief symbolises the Congo grieving for its dead. Ward presented the statue to Mill Hill and it is now used by Mill Hill pupils as part of their study of slavery.
Herbert Ward (1863-1919) had an extraordinary life. He was a miner, a sail maker, a sailor, a stock rider, a circus gymnast, a soldier, a sculptor and a great humanitarian. When he died in 1919 The Times said “a great romantic and heroic figure is gone. His life work was international friendship”.
