Junior Tennis Open 2017

Each year, pupils from ten of our feeder schools compete in the successful Mill Hill Junior Open Tennis Competition at Gosling Sports Park, Welwyn.

This year, the twelfth successive year of the competition, (aimed at Under 11s, year 5 and 6), attracted over 60 pupils, and once again it was a full day of tennis for the competitors with main competitions and consolation events. We were delighted to welcome some new schools to the event, and we were fortunate that the weather was on our side, with over 200 matches being completed both on the indoor and outdoor courts.

It was good to see some new schools emerging to the final stages of the competition. In the boys’ event it was the talented Kim Sikka, (Devonshire House) who retained the trophy; Kim beat up and coming Y5 pupil, Lucas Smart (Arnold House) in an intense final, with exceptionally long and exciting rallies. The match was finally decided on a tie break with Kim winning 5-2.

In the girls’ event, Cordelia O’Sullivan (Edge Grove) and semi-finalist from last years’ event took on Emily Deem (Newberries) and again, it was an exciting game with some creative points from both girls. However, it was Cordelia’s consistency that eventually won through, the final score being 4-1.

Trophies were presented to all the Quarter, Semi and Finalists by British Tennis player Barnaby Smith who recently competed in the junior event at Roland Garros and is aiming to qualify for junior Wimbledon next month. He is currently training with the Gosling Academy.

20 Fourth Form pupils assisted in the running of this event and helped to make it a really enjoyable day for all the children who participated.

The provisional date for this next year’s event is Thursday 14th June 2018. Please direct any queries to sarah@millhill.org.uk
