Tennis continues to be a key sport at Mill Hill and with the ongoing support of a PCA qualified tennis coach the school currently has an extremely strong squad of junior and senior players. All tennis pupils have the opportunity to receive weekly coaching at the school throughout the whole year and further to our partnership with Gosling Sports Park (Welwyn) some of our pupils have been able to make full use of their indoor courts.
Eoin Kelly and Sebastian Daly – Winners of the U15 Phillips Cup at the I.S.T.A.Championships 2011.Both the junior boys and girls have a busy schedule during the summer term with fixtures against well known tennis schools such as Westminster and Haberdashers’. Mill Hill also enters the AEGON School Tennis Competitions including the Year 10 event, and the Aberdare and Glanville Cups as well as the I.S.T.A Championships (held at Eton). As well as this the majority of pupils playing tennis receive coaching and compete regularly in tournaments outside school and hold current LTA ratings.
Excellent results have been achieved over the last few years despite often playing against older opposition. The girls and boys have previously been area champions in the AEGON Year 10 Competition, and have reached the National Quarter Finals of this event. In the I.S.T.A. our U15 boys and girls regularly reach quarter final stages, and this year one pair won the Phillips Cup U15 Plate.
Over the last few years the tennis squad have been on tour visiting the world renowned tennis centre, La Manga, in Spain on 3 occasions where pupils receive an intensive week of coaching and competition. They have also toured South Africa where they competed in the Cape Town International Tennis Tournament.
We always aim to take pupils to one of the UK’s major grass court championships – in the past we have visited the AEGON Championships at Queen’s Club and last year we visited the All England Club during the Wimbledon Championships.
As well as focusing on our current pupils, we also host an annual U11 Tennis Competition in conjunction with Gosling Sports Park which over the past 5 years has attracted an entry of over 60 boys and girls.
With the strong intake of tennis pupils to the school over the next few years, tennis will continue to flourish at Mill Hill.
