6th Formers Visit UCL for Science and Medicine Day

On Tuesday 5th Feb. Professor Derek Yellon, Director of the Hatter Cardiovascular Institute of UCL invited a group of 6th form biologists from Mill Hill School to participate in a special “Science and Medicine Day” with lectures and activities related to clinical practice and medical research. Seminars explored a wide range of specialisms including cardiology, respiratory medicine, emergency medicine, intensive care medicine and gastroenterology. Our students were privileged to hear from the top people in these fields and particularly enjoyed participating in a war zone exercise devised by Wilf Pugsley, an RAF surgeon recently returned form Iraq.

During the morning, the Mill Hill students were given a tour of the research labs and invited to participate in some of the experiments and demonstrations. They also learnt about the use of ECGs and ultrasound scans, some of them becoming guinea pigs in the process. All this, plus a very good lunch leaves us greatly indebted to Professor Yellon and his colleagues, Prof. Alastair Forbes, Dr. Geoff Bellingan, Dr. Derek Hausenloy, Dr. Malcolm Walker, Prof. Geoff Laurent and Mr. Wilf Pugsley.
