On 15th January 12 of the fastest Y8 & Y9 cross country runners from Belmont represented the school at the Annual Borough Cross-Country Championships in the 2360 metre event held at Copthall Stadium. Out of a total of 60 girls Sophie H and Ella D kept in touch with the leading girls throughout (several of whom were County runners) and after a sprint finish managed to be placed 6th and 10th. Other placings were Anna M at 15th, Holly S at 28th, Evie C at 37th and Helena B at 38th. Other placings were Anna M at 15th, Sienna M at 21st, Holly S at 28th, Evie C at 37th and Helena B at 38th.
The boy’s race with 70 competitors was extremely tough with many of the front runners moving away from the chasing group within the first few hundred meters. Pierce M did very well to keep up a steady pace finishing 14th, Ricky R produced a brilliant sprint finish holding off the opposition for 21st place, Jonathon E finished 23rd, William R was 43rd and Oliver I was 46th.
We are now waiting to hear how many of our pupils gained a place on the Barnet Team (selected from the first 15 finishers in each race) for the Middlesex Cross Country Championships to be held at Harrow School in February.
The pupils really enjoyed competing and supporting each other at such a well organised and competitive meeting and we now hope to have this as an annual event in the Belmont calendar.
