History Club Trip with the Thames Explorers

On Saturday some members of the Belmont History Club took part in an archaeology workshop and dig along the River Thames. Pupils spent the morning at the Museum of London, learning how to identify and classify objects into the correct historical time period, then in the afternoon we put our new skills into practice along the Thames foreshore. Between us, we uncovered Medieval and Tudor pottery and examples of Victorian glass, leather and roof tiles, as well as countless animal bones and oyster shells, the remains of hundred years’ worth of our ancestor’s lunch! Among our most interesting finds were a number of 17th century clay tobacco pipes, one of which was inscribed ‘WS’ perhaps belonging to the Bard himself!
