Year 11 pupils practised their verbal communication skills in one of their Business Studies lessons. Pupils had to turn their chairs and sit back-to-back. Each pupil had an image which they hid from their partner. They then took turns to describe their image to their partner, using only verbal communication and in English; their partner then had to draw it.
This activity demonstrated to pupils that barriers to good communication exist therefore they need to speak in simple, grammatical, and understandable terms. They also need to give examples, ask for feedback and put what they said previously into different words. Without proper listening, effective communication does not occur!
