Belmont takes on the National Chess Championships!

Last weekend four teams of talented Belmont Chess players took part in the English Primary Schools Chess Association, Semi-Final Competition at Pontins in Prestatyn, North Wales.

More than 60 teams met in the ballroom in Pontins holiday camp to begin battle:

  • Six games of Chess
  • Four sections- U9, U11, Plate U9, Plate U11
  • Exam conditions, 1 hour 40 per game!

U9 and U11 teams had a wonderfully successful and thrilling tournament playing six games over the Saturday and Sunday. The U11 Team came in 7th place in this semi-final, making Belmont School equal 12th nationally. The U11 Plate A Team also did magnificently scooping up 2nd Place in their section.

This tournament was a wonderful experience for the team members. It was a brilliant opportunity to strengthen existing friendships and forge new ones between different age groups.  There was some serious concentration in the matches, but to balance this – the glorious weather enabled some equally serious fun to be had at the beach.

Angela Eyton gave her time and encouragement ad infinitum and schooled the teams through the tough competition. She had kind words to say to every child about some aspect of their game while nudging them to consider their weak points in order to play a stronger match in the following round.

We all appreciate the support Belmont has given chess in the last three years and have great hopes of beating this year’s success in 2019.
