Year 6 Trip to Mountfitchet Castle

On Wednesday Year 6 visited Mountfitchet Castle in Stanstead as part of their topic on the lives of Medieval people.  The castle is a reconstruction of the original Motte and Bailey Castle built during the reign of William the Conqueror.  Pupils were able to identify the different defensive features of the castle such as the high wooden fence surrounding the bailey and enjoyed trying on the medieval armour.  Pupils were also able to see how the community was self-sufficient as the castle had its own blacksmith, bake house, tanner and brewery and there was even a small church for worship.  Our pupils enjoyed the opportunity to feed the goats and deer that roamed free, whilst being carefully to avoid the greedy chickens and luckily we did not have to use the medieval way of dispensing justice…the stocks!
