Brighton Pre-Season Rugby Tour 2018

On Friday 14 and Saturday 15 September, a number of pupils from Year 5 and 6 embarked on the annual Brighton Pre-Season Rugby Tour. The pupils’ first stop was at Brighton College, both the under 10A and under 11A came up against strong opposition with the under 10A’s losing 10 tries to 7 and the under 11A drawing with 5 tries each.

The boys had a post-match tee and then headed off to Brighton Pier to enjoy some time to play on the arcade and try out some of the rides on offer. The boys seemed to have lots of fun during this time and were amazed to see Jamie Coffer queuing up to go on the biggest ride on the Pier.

Everyone has worked up quite an appetite after running around the Pier so it was time to relax and enjoy some fish and chips. The portions were huge so there were plenty of smiles on show, this was short-lived, as a giant seagull swooped down and took a big bite of Alex Coombes hotdog… Don’t worry, we bought him a new one.

We then ventured to the hotel where the boys were entertained with a Rugby quiz by Mr Phillips and Mr Williams whilst Mr Bird and I got everyone checked in. An early night was enjoyed by all, in preparation for a big day.

The next day, both teams played against Trinity College, the under 10A improved massively from their game the day before and won 10-4. The under 11A game was a tighter affair with Trinity just beating Belmont by 5 tries to 4.

We stayed to watch Trinity first XV play against John Fisher XV which was great for our boys to see a big school derby. Mr Phillips (an ex Trinity pupil) wasn’t too impressed with the final result as Trinity lost the match.

The tour was finished off with a journey back through Central London seeing some of the tourist sights and a game of bowling and a meal in Watford before heading back to Belmont. All of the boys seemed to really enjoy the trip and will hopefully prove to be a great team bonding exercise.

I’d like to thank the teachers who gave up their time and came on the trip, without these, these trips wouldn’t be possible. Mr Bird and Mr Phillips who took the under 11’s and Mr Williams who coached alongside myself with the under 10’s. Thank you also to all of the parents who came down to Brighton and supported the boys, it was great to see so many of you there.

Looking forward to next year already.
