Triumph for our Table Tennis Teams

The medals were certainly ‘pinging’ last night as both the U16 and U19 Teams returned from the North London Table Tennis Championships with a clean sweep having won both age group categories.

This is the first time Mill Hill School has competed in the North London Schools’ Table Tennis Championships at Ellenborough Table Tennis Club, Enfield, and with the profile of Table Tennis increasing as a school sport, this was a popular event attended by many schools in the North London area.

The Senior Team of Chris K (Cedars), Lian M (Atkinson), Nathan N (Cedars)  and Yoshiaki S (Collinson) were the first to collect their medals sealing excellent victories over Sir George Monoux College (6-2) and Lammas School (6-2). It was clear to see the talent of these boys especially with Lian and Nathan who bothplayed above their age group. It was also impressive to see that neither Lian or Yoshiaki dropped a game all afternoon.

In the junior event, once again the ability of these boys was quite outstanding. In their group matches they had convincing victories over Ark-John-Keates (8-0) and Kingsmead (8-0 ) and a draw (4-4) with the Jewish Community Secondary School (JCOSS). Leo M (School) displayed some superb attacking and defensive play, whilst Robert E (Atkinson), and Ben B (Priestley) showed their mental toughness winning some pretty tight matches, Robert with a series of net cords in one of his games! Sami K (Murray) too performed consistently throughout the afternoon and dug deep towards the end as tiredness hit. In the semi-final the boys had a convincing win against Broomfield (6-0) and then went on to play JCOSS in the final, the team they had drawn against within the group stage. It was a tense final, but the boys stood their ground eventually claiming a 5-3 victory.

For some pupils, involvement in this event contributed towards their practical assessment at either GCSE or A Level so was an excellent opportunity for them to put their skills into practice following their attendance to the Monday Lunchtime Table Tennis Club. Hungarian professional Urban Gergeley (Urfi) has worked tirelessly with the boys this term, honing their skills and preparing them for the competitive side of the game. Urfi will now be preparing the boys for the next stage of the competition at the London Table Tennis Championships on Saturday 12 January at the University of East London. We wish them all the best as they get themselves ready for the New Year competition.
