The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Open Day

On Sunday 19 May Ms Banks took four Lower Sixth pupils (Agne, Hugo, Sam and Alexi) to the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital Open Day. While the DT pupils enjoyed an exciting visit to the Centre for Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology (Hugo even got to wear/use an exoskeleton suit), Agne (with her Biology hat on) toured the operating theatre and got some hands-on experience of drilling into a bone. The on-site displays of engineered, replacement body parts were amazing and we learned that all the 3D printed designs used to help rehabilitate sick or injured animals by ‘supervet’ Noel Fitzpatrick, are made by the technical support team at Stanmore.

The event was a brilliant introduction to both medical and engineering matters and emphasised the increasingly strong cross-over between these two important areas.
