Year 2 have enjoyed extending the work on ‘The Firebird’ that they had started previously in their task time. Using the triangle, drum and cymbals we practiced how to crescendo (gradually get louder) on these instruments to help create a dramatic effect and a climax towards the ending of the piece. We discussed how important it was to watch the conductor so that all musicians finished at the same time to create a sharp, crisp ending. The children realised that it is difficult to play an instrument and look at the conductor at the same time. This prompted us to explore our peripheral vision. We had fun testing this by someone moving whilst the children weren’t looking directly at them. They were surprised by how much they could still see. The children were however disappointed to learn that they didn’t have eyes at the back of their heads like us adults!
