Working in groups children in Year 3 were using concrete representations using the Diennes equipment to show and explain regrouping from thousand to hundreds, tens and ones when subtracting a 4 digit number from a 4 digit multiple of a thousand. Children were also developing their understanding of subtracting 4 digit numbers with zeros using Place Value boards. This development of the children’s concrete understanding then enabled them to use the standard vertical method of subtraction to calculate their sums. Great fun had by all!
