This week in Music…

The children were treated to a visit from Christina Emanuel, a professional Violinist who also teaches at Belmont and Mill Hill School. Christina played the famous soprano aria ‘O mio babbino caro’ from the opera Gianni Schicchi by Puccini. The children were completely mesmerised and were also a little surprised by the power of the violin. It is unusual to be so close to an instrument and have the opportunity to see how the violin is played and the hear the wonderful timbre of the instrument in a small space. The children were then able to ask Christina any questions they would like about the violin. Their questions were well thought out and articulate with many wanting to know why you need to move your fingers on the strings and why there were ‘f’ holes on the instrument. The children were then all able to have a go at playing the violin, Christina showed them the correct posture needed, and explained how to make a good sound to avoid “squeaking” or making a feathery sound. The children needed to apply just the right amount of pressure to the bow to create the desired sound. The children were very keen to try the instrument and some were even asking for a violin club…watch this space!

Thank you very much to Christina for coming to Grimsdell and sharing her wonderful talent and passion for the violin with us.
