Year 5 students take on the Design & Make Challenge at St John’s School

Teamwork, design thinking, problem solving and imagination was part of the Design & Make Challenge at St John’s school yesterday Thursday 6 February.

Our two teams of Year 5 students got involved in designing and making an Igloo with the fully functioning doors for Lego figures to fit in and providing shelter in Arctic windy conditions.

The final mark was based on team work, problem solving, sketching and the final model of the igloo and catapult.

Working on two design challenges and applying time management skills. It was lovely to see them fully enjoying the Arctic challenge, working as team and competing against 11 teams from a range of schools.

Well done to all members for their energy and enthusiasm, teamwork and design thinking throughout the day.

Ava Smith reflection: “During the challenge we needed to make an igloo out of marshmallows and toothpicks. We had to make a door which would open and close easily. The second part of the challenge was to create a catapult which through snow (marshmallows) at a toy Polar Bear – Pandora. My Team won the third place and got a Bronze medal. We loved the whole day and met lots of new friends and fellow designers and i’m looking forward to taking part in more challenges”.
