Celebrating Women in Science

On Monday 9 March we celebrated Women in Science with a special trio of activities centred on the discovery of DNA. In Chemistry, pupils extracted DNA from peas with Ms Izzo. In Biology, Ms Lilley and Ms Batsford led a sessions on microscopes and the structure of DNA and in Physics, Mrs Bailey spoke to pupils about the scale of the universe and discoveries made by two female scientists working with waves and the two ends of the electromagnetic spectrum; Rosalind Franklin and her use of x-rays to discover the structure of DNA and Jocelyn Bell Burnell’s discovery of Pulsars using radio waves. A huge thanks to the technicians and A Level helpers who made sure the day ran so smoothly.
