Year 6 DT Designers Day

A fantastically creative day was had by all participants in the Design & Technology department’s annual Y6 Designers Day. We welcomed pupils from 3 visiting schools – St Paul’s, St Johns’ and Goodwyn – to take part in the event, starting with a presentation from Robert Monaghan from AIR, a packaging designer with some 25 years experience.

8 teams of 4 pupils were then set the challenge of creating a new packaging concept for an Easter chocolate product with a range of 3D models for new chocolate shapes as an alternative to the traditional egg design. The children’s response was really enthusiastic and the quality of ideas, and work, produced over the two 1 hour workshops impressed Robert and all the staff involved.

The day had been introduced with some slides showing the importance of the environment and the use of automation and technology in the future; it was stressed though, that no matter how ‘smart’ computers and robots become they can never be creative, and with the skills on show during the day I’m confident that our future is in safe hands!
