This Week in Year 1!

What a glorious sunny start to the new academic year we have had this week! The children were very quick to work out that our new topic this term is London and we have spent this week getting to know each other.  Thank you to all our families for sending in such wonderful family photos which we shared with each other.

On Wednesday, we had an unexpected visit by a member of the Royal family. Yes!  It was Queen Elizabeth II herself!  We were all taken by surprise and some children had the opportunity to ask her some questions.

In Literacy, the children identified lowercase and uppercase letters and learned when and why we use capital letters. They also were reminded what a sentence needs to have, including finger spaces, a capital letter and a full stop. We then composed and ordered our own sentences about our family photos.

We also spent time learning outside this week and in Geography we learned what a landmark is and went on a local landmark hunt using our iPads to record what we saw. We have begun to learn the cardinal directions and had a go at using a compass. In Art, we practised observing our facial features using a mirror and learned how to draw and add colour to our self-portraits.
