This Week in Year 2!

Welcome back Year 2 to the second half of the Autumn Term. We hope you all had a fantastic break and enjoyed lots of family fun time!

Before the holidays, Key stage 1 joined forces to celebrate the Marvellous Middle of our London topic by having our own Royal Garden Party. We were blessed by gorgeous sunshine as we made full use of our outside spaces and tents. The children were entertained by Mr Marvel with a terrific show of magic laughter and a bunny rabbit! He was truly brilliant and the children loved the traditional Punch and Judy show.

Then the children feasted on food they had made including Eton mess, jelly, decorated cupcakes, cucumber sandwiches and squash. It was delicious!

It was delightful to welcome the children back to school this week with a special message from the Queen. She said that she wanted the children to visit London and find out about the local landmarks. She left a parcel for the children, wrapped in a Union Jack flag, which contained some beautiful books, maps and postcards. The children took some time to read the books and examine the maps. We also read ‘The Queen’s Hat’ by Steve Anthony and used a simple map to locate and plot landmarks in London. It was super that so many of our Year 2 families also visited London during the holidays and the children took great delight in telling us about what they saw.

Many of our lovely Grimsdell families will be celebrating Diwali this week so the children learnt about celebrations from different cultures. We encouraged the children to talk to us about the different festivals they celebrate with their families. Then we asked and answered questions about which is our favourite celebration and why, how celebrations can be different and similar. We discussed how we should respect everyone’s traditions and how important it is to learn about all cultures. Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating with their families.

We were thrilled to welcome Ms Burgess back to Grimsdell this week. She is a specialist art teacher who taught each Year 2 class about the wonders of London Landscapes. Have a look at the pictures to see the children’s achievements.
