This week in Year 1…

This week in Year 1, we have been focusing on the text ‘Susan laughs’, which shares the story of a little girl who uses a wheelchair. Even though she uses a wheelchair, she is just like everyone else; as she loves to sing, play and be with her friends. Our children borrowed the use of a real wheelchair and learnt a lesson in empathy on the challenges a wheelchair bound individual might face in accessibility and discussed way in which we could support or help them.

The children also planned and wrote a rhyming poem, based on the ‘Susan laughs’ text. Children used their understanding of this week’s grammar lesson to ensure their poem was written in the third person singular in the present tense. For example, “Theo sings, Susan swings”.

In art, we were introduced to the famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. Children practiced colour blending, to find the relation between the primary and secondary colours. Children then created their own Kandinsky inspired artwork, of circular wheels using their primary and secondary colours.

For our Task Time session, children took part in ICT and animated using keynote, built a bridge and were challenged with fortifying it. For RSE, children were introduced to the Buddhist Religion and created Mandala ‘wheels’.
